Hay guys (: heres the new novel. 246nzaw

December 2, 2002.

A young boy playing with his Gameboy Advance sits on his bed, his little fingers furiously tapping away at the buttons. His brow is furrowed together in frustration. All of his attention is on the game, and he ignores all the sounds of the city coming from the open window; cars driving near, the wind breezing by. A rare afternoon LA sun shines through the window, and slowly works its way over his concentrated face. This disturbs and distracts him, making him freeze for the slightest moment. Seconds later, he howls as the sound of failure emits from the small speaker. He sighs, and flips the power switch to “OFF”, throwing the hand-held game onto the pillow beside him. Rubbing his nose unconsciously, he jumps off his bed. His room is decently sized, with pictures of Power Rangers plastered on the walls, pieces of clothing and underwear spread out here and there. He begins to walk out of his room, headed for his door. However, he pauses as he passes the full length mirror, and looks at his reflection.

I stared back at the person who was staring at me. He looked about six, two years younger than he was. I frowned, and he frowned back at me. I lifted my skinny arms, and flexed in a very macho way. No real difference showed going from age seven to eight. I was still the same size! What a birthday surprise.

My reflection huffed out a breath, and scowled. I continued to look back at the person copying my every movement in the mirror.

He was Korean, though you probably couldn’t tell if you didn’t know; with almond shaped eyes. Tanned skin, darker than normal. Short, black hair. A shirtless, muscular, but small framed body. A red bandana tied around his neck. An ovular face. His most interesting feature was his eyes, however. They were dark brown, and brimmed with innocence, but mixed with burning curiosity, and pent in excitement.

They quickly ran over the rest of my body again, inspecting for anything wrong. I heard a squeaky voice, which disappointingly came from my throat, gasp as I discovered...I wasn't wearing any pants.

Instinctively, my hands grabbed the bottom edges of my silver boxers, decorated with golden lightning bolts. My little legs carried me around my room as I scrambled to find a pair of jeans, hands still holding onto my boxers. Tripping over the ragged, blue rug, I fell onto my stomach, with a solid thud.

“Oof,” I muttered, still unsatisfied at my high voice.

I put my hands, palms facing downward, at the sides of my chest, and pushed upward, getting up, but stopped. I had landed right at the side of my green bed, and underneath, I saw my old, faded jeans. Pleased, I quickly grabbed them from under, ignoring the dust that followed and whooshed into the air.

I was just about to pull them on, when I heard the front door squeak open. I froze, and strained to hear who it was. I only had half of my leg into my jeans when I heard my older sister Soo’s sweet, musical voice.

“Oh, hey, Uncle John!”

She sounded cheerful.

Something in me sparked, and I instantly became excited. Uncle John. He was finally here, on my birthday! Maybe it wasn’t so bad today after all.

Forgetting I only had part of my jeans on, I tried to sprint out of my room. Once again, I tripped, and fell face flat onto the wood floor. My nose was flat against the ground, and it started to throb. It felt funny to breathe through it, as if I were only getting air through half of each nostril. As I inhaled and exhaled, my nose holes whistled a quiet, high pitched sound. My bandana tickled on my neck.

“Ow…” I groaned. “That hurt…”

My ears heard footsteps, quick, but confident, coming closer and getting louder. They stopped right in front of me.

I lifted my eyes slowly. I saw black dress shoes first, followed by black slacks, and a dark black jacket that covered a crisp, clean, white shirt. And right on top of that was a head with a face that was grinning enormously.

“Hey, Johnny! Looks like you’re excited about your birthday, you don’t even have your pants on all the way yet!” my Uncle Jonathan guffawed.

He threw his head back, and laughed heartily. I could see his strong chest muscles move as he laughed, even through his white shirt. He seemed so young and alive! I could feel my face becoming red. I smiled sheepishly, and turned my face back down to the wood paneled floor.

“Hi Uncle John…” I said meekly, my face feeling as if it were on fire.

I was so embarrassed! How could I TRIP in front of Uncle John?! I simply couldn’t believe it, but it happened. I then realized, that he wasn’t laughing anymore. I looked up, and I saw his smooth, light face suddenly serious. His dark almond shaped eyes, much like mine, weren’t hard…But instead, determined.

Before I knew it, I felt strong and steady hands lift me from underneath my armpits, and up into the air, my short, little legs dangling beneath me. I blinked, and Uncle John’s face was right in front of mine. His voice came out gentle, but stern.

“Jonathan, listen to me.”

I stared at him, unsure and nervous of what was going to happen next. I tried to lift my hand to rub my nose, but being suspended in the air, my hand couldn’t reach my face.

I think he could tell that I was scared, because his expression softened, and he said, “I’m not mad at you, Johnny. Don’t worry. I just felt kind of sad because you don’t even sound very happy to see me!”

I was stunned.

“I even stalled…er… work to come see you…”

His facial expression flashed, and I thought I could see… Apprehension? Fear? I was too shocked to focus on that, though. I could feel my jaw drop, and the fabric of my bandana rubbed against my chin. Uncle John started to laugh again, and set me down. The floor felt cold beneath my bare feet.

I rubbed my nose thoughtfully. He thought I wasn’t happy to see him?! Was he kidding me? I was incredibly happy to see him! I was ecstatic!

“He came to see me before going to work!” I thought. “But wait…I forgot. What does Uncle John do for work?”

I paused, and came to realize that I never did know what my hero did for a living. I made a mental note to ask him later, and to have him train me to be just like him! I mean, with that nice outfit, it was bound to be something interesting, right? Once again, however, I concentrated on the business at hand.

“Uncle John…” I began, but I paused, quickly pulling my jeans on, zipping, and buttoning them in one fluid motion. He seemed to be amused at this, and raised an eyebrow, a small smile on his face.

“Yes, Johnny?” he asked, leaning against the door frame.

“Uncle John, I’m happy you came!” I said. “Why do you think that I’m not?” I demanded.

I frowned, and crossed my arms, looking him directly in the eyes.

He chuckled, and squatted down to my level. Then he reached out with one hand, and ruffled my short hair.

“You just seemed so down when you were on the ground.”

Uncle John stopped, laughed suddenly, and shook his head, perplexed by his incredibly unplanned and stupid pun. I grinned, and he continued.

“I mean, you seemed so quiet. That’s all. Like you didn’t wanna see me.”

A look of irritation spread across my face; I could feel it.

“That’s stupid, Uncle. Babo, babo! I wanted you to come today!” I exclaimed, waving my arms about.

Uncle John then smiled, and it was filled with pure happiness.

“Well, I’m very glad to hear that, Johnny!”

He picked me up into a tight embrace, and I wrapped my arms around him, feeling the warmth of his affection surround me.

“Happy Birthday, Jonathan,” he told me in my ear.

“Thanks, Uncle John,” I whispered back.

Could today get any better? My birthday, and seeing Uncle John; the one who I loved more than anyone else, even my mom. The one who I was named after. The one who was in my eyes, my father. I could have just stayed there, in his hug, for the rest of the day, and been satisfied.

Our moment was interrupted when my older brother, Eric, walked by, beer bottle in his right hand. He saw our Uncle, and stopped in the hallway. He raised his left hand in greeting.

“Yo, Uncle John.”

Uncle John pulled away from me, and set me down. I stood stiff, annoyed by Eric disrupting my happy little moment.

Irritated, I scoffed, “Wow, you actually came out of your room.”

Eric rolled his eyes. “Shut up, squirt,” he said, with a small grin on his face.

I rebelliously stuck my tongue out at him, and then tightened my bandana. Both Uncle John and Eric noticed this.

“Ew, you still wear that? That thing looks dirty enough to be used toilet paper,” Eric teased.

“It looks perfectly clean to me, Jin,” Uncle John replied, calling Eric by his nickname.

His eyes narrowed as he glanced at the bottle in my brother’s hand. Then, he studied him. I studied him too, and he was the same as usual. Skinny, wearing a thin, white tank top. Baggy jeans, shaggy black hair, a bored facial expression, and a slouched body posture. Eric didn’t get drunk often, but when he did, he looked horrible. To me, Eric looked like he was in pretty good shape, at least for now. I was glad, but I didn’t show it.

Uncle John, still in squatting position, put his hands on his knees and stood up straight, standing right in the doorway of my room. He was taller than Eric, but only by an inch or two. Eric was 20; but he looked as if he were a little younger, maybe 18.

Uncle John spoke to Eric very differently than he spoke to me. His voice was quiet, and serious.

“Jin, you know, too much of those drinks aren’t good for you.”

My brother’s face expression tightened. He spoke controlled.

“Yeah, I know. But I don’t drink a lot. So I’m good.”
Then he turned around, and stalked off, down the hallway, back into his room. I heard the door slam.

I rubbed the side of my nose again, and looked down, unsure of what to say.

“My bandana wasn’t really dirty”, I thought. I just haven’t washed it in a while. Maybe I’ll ask mom or Soo to wash it for me today!” I cheerfully added onto my thought.

I remembered last year, when Uncle John had given it to me as a gift. It was one of my most treasured possessions, and to keep it safe, I wore it at all times. Well, except for when it was being washed. I had been afraid the bright red color would fade out if I washed it too often, so I tried to keep it clean. It usually wound up getting dirty somehow, so my efforts were set back a bit.

My internal conversation with myself was cut short, when I realized that Uncle John was now facing me instead of the hallway. He took a few steps into my room and sighed heavily.

“Your brother. He’s a handful sometimes, isn’t he, Johnny?”

I nodded ruefully. “Sometimes, he plays with me, but usually, he’s in his room.”

Remembering something, my face twisted up with a look of displeasure.

“That makes me have to ask Noona to play with me a lot, and she’s boring!!”
Chapter One : A Birthday Surprise

Part 2 of 2

“I heard someone say my name,” she said, looking back and forth between Uncle John and me.

I blushed and looked down, not wanting to tell my older sister that I had just called her boring. However, Uncle John didn’t think like I did, and promptly informed Soo.

Placing a hand on top of my head, my uncle happily chirped, “Johnny here said that you were boring to play with!”

I ran behind him as fast as I possibly could. My hands flew in front of my face, and I shut my eyes tight.

Silence. That’s all I could hear, and for a fleeting moment, I thought perhaps, Soo had taken that as an awful insult. To my relief, she laughed out loud, and the gentle sound of wind chimes tinkled throughout the air. I opened my eyes, and for some strange reason, my chest hurt. I realized that I was holding my breath. Exhaling, then inhaling, I regained my confidence.

Then, I stepped out from behind Uncle John, and looked up at him. He was trying hard not to laugh, I could tell. His mouth kept going back and forth between a straight line and a smile, and his face was almost crimson. Soo walked into my room, and put her hands on her hips.

“Boring, huh?” she smirked, looking down on me.

“Well, I, uh…” I stammered.

Uncle John laughed, and Soo grinned. I didn’t want to seem incredibly stupid, so I thought of an excuse to use.

“Well…You’re always so busy helping Ohma!” I whined, pushing my bottom lip out.

For some strange reason, my sister’s grin got wider. I doubled back mentally, and blinked.

Suddenly, she reached into her pocket, and pulled out three shiny, new-looking tickets.

…Tickets?!

Bending over, she rested on hand on her knee, and looked me straight in the eye. Then, she waved the three tickets in front of my face.

“Well, well then! Lucky for you, I’ve cleared my entire schedule for today, and tomorrow, so just Uncle John, you, and I can go out to the movies for your birthday. We’ll go to see what-ev-er you want to see, Young Min,” she said, spacing out “whatever”.

Though she had used my Korean name, I hadn’t yet absorbed this new information. There was a glint of glee in her eyes.

I blinked again, and stood there, slowly processing what she had said. Time stood still as I came to understand what my sister was holding in her hand. Then, realization flooded into me, hitting me hard, like a slap to the face.

I laughed at first, and then stopped, grinning, and blabbering, total nonsense.

“What?! You…Me…Tickets…Uncle John! Movie! My birthday? Yes? Together?! YES!”

I was so happy, I could have done flips and cartwheels in celebration. In fact, I almost DID do a flip, but my knee hit the edge of my bed mid-air, and I fell onto my back. I didn’t notice the pain, or notice the fact that my Uncle repeatedly kept glancing out of my window, as if he were looking for something.

I jumped back up, with a grin on my face that I felt, would never, ever, erase, even in my sleep. I couldn’t believe it. No one ever did anything for my birthday, and even if they did, it was usually only my friend Roy, with his little home made cards.

I was more than happy. I was incredibly, and wonderfully ecstatic.

I looked back and forth between my sister and my uncle. She was smiling, and golden, pure, happiness was in her eyes. For the first time in a long time, my Noona looked…Well, alive. I was glad that I’d pleased her with my excitement, and I leaped forward to hug her.

“Oh! What’s this, Young Min?” Soo asked, a bit surprised.

“Thank you, Noona! I love you! Sarang hae~!” I sang.

She laughed. “I’m really glad you’re happy, John. I really am.”

I unhinged my arms from around my sister, and she stood up, then stepped back. Then, she turned to look at my Uncle, who had that look of apprehension, and…That slightest expression of fear… Again?

Soo stared at him, her eyes were boring in his, trying to silently ask the questions that were on the very tip of my own tongue.

What’s wrong?

Is something the matter?

How come you don’t look happy? It’s your favorite nephew’s birthday, for God’s sake!

But, instead, she asked, “So, Uncle John, you up to see a movie?”

Uncle John blinked, and stood silent for a moment, as if he were being woken up from a faraway dream. It was so strange, so alien, to see my Uncle act is such a manner. It was really starting to disturb me, and kind of… freak me out.

“Huh? What? Sorry, I didn’t catch that.”

Soo shook her head, and sighed.

“Do you want to go to the movies with us,” she said, gesturing to first herself, then me, “for Jonathan’s birthday?”

He blinked again, and then his forehead creased.

“Ah…I…I…I have to leave in about half an hour, so I can’t. I’m really, really, sorry, you guys.”
My uncle’s face immediately filled up with regret, and sadness.

It was nothing compared to what I felt.

Up until right then, I had been in a lovely, rosy, and happy bubble. As he said those words, my bubble popped, and it was like my world had come crashing down on me, and all my excitement, all my joy, had been drained from me. I don’t exactly know why I was so devastated, I mean, my uncle was busy, he had a life, a job, and he couldn’t sacrifice his precious time for me. And I understood completely, that his work was important, and it was top priority.

…Right?

I hadn’t noticed, but suddenly, I was looking at the floor, my body slouched over. It was probably better that way, anyway. That un-erasable grin had turned into a permanent frown. Thankfully, I wasn’t too upset to be crying, but I was close. Oh, so close. I could feel the tears, just ready to be released, and stream down my cheeks, like a never-ending river.

I turned my head to look up at my sister, and what I saw was simply appalling.

Whereas I had been expecting grief, disappointment, and possibly, irritation, my sister’s expression contained something much, much, different.

Her arms were crossed, and when I looked at her face, it almost scared me. Rage was written everywhere, and it was swirling within her dark brown eyes. Her mouth was in a straight line, and she almost gritted her teeth when she spoke.

“Are… you kidding me?! Why not?” she demanded. Her voice came out strained ; My sister was trying her hardest to control herself.

I winced at the ferocity in her voice, and when I took a side-glance at Uncle John, he looked genuinely afraid.

“W-work business. It’s mandatory, and if I don’t get where I have to be, I-I’ll be fired,” he stuttered.

My emotions were honestly, reverted from gloom, and despair, to a cross between amusement, and serious disbelief. Here was my hero, my Uncle John, my fearless, confident Uncle John ; who was cowering, and stuttering before his niece. It was seriously ridiculous.

My sister sucked in a huge breath, and then exhaled it slowly, calming herself. Soo closed her eyes, and then turned towards me. I took a step backward, and looked up at her, my eyes almost bulging out of my head, wondering what she was going to say.

“Young Min, will you excuse your Uncle and me? I need to talk to him for a second ; Just the grown-ups, okay?” she said, almost sweetly.

I was speechless, so I just nodded furiously as she grabbed my uncle’s arm, and pulled him through the door frame, shutting the door tightly behind her.
I sighed heavily, and then plopped onto my bed. The springs creaked, even with my light weight. I twiddled my thumbs, and stared at my door, listening to my sister scolding, and arguing with my Uncle.

“I can’t believe you! How could you bail out on Jonathan?! JONATHAN, of all people! He’s your nephew. He’s been WAITING for you to come, Uncle.”

My sister’s voice was harsh, and angry.

“I…It’s different this time, Soo. This thing I’ve got to go to… It’s really important. I..I could lose my job. Do you understand that?”

My uncle’s voice was pleading, and exasperated.

“Oh, they can’t give you a day off, for family matters? Who the hell do you work for anyway? You never told us. What in the world kinda place or people do you work for, that doesn’t allow little things like this, huh? You could of at least come earlier, you know. Half an hour?! Give me a damn break.”

My jaw almost dropped, from the way my sister spoke to my uncle, our elder. That was crossing the line. I wasn’t sure what my uncle had to say to that.

But, when he did, I’m sure that I would have been absolutely terrified, because there was so much authority, so much shocking power in his voice, that it was hard to believe that my sister didn’t immediately back up, and just agree with him.

“Soo Bae. That is enough. You have absolutely no right to talk to me like that. Though he is your brother, I am still your uncle, and your elder. Respect is still mandatory. Do you understand?”

It was silent, and once again, I could hear the birds outside, chirping. My sister was probably thinking of something to say.

“…Fine. I’m sorry. But, you have to know, that if you leave this house without doing something to celebrate that boy’s birthday, you’ll scar his poor heart forever, and leave him miserable. On his own birthday. So, I think we should come up with something that we can do in…”

She paused, most likely to look at the hall clock, to check the time.

“About 25 minutes. Got any ideas?”

I stopped focusing on their conversation, and looked out the window. Their voices drifted, and faded from my mind. The sun was shining today, a rare occasion. I hopped off of my bed, and stood directly in front of the small window. The sun kissed my face, and it felt delightfully warm. Closing my eyes, I slowly breathed in, and rubbed my nose. The old, blue rug that I stood on tickled my bare feet, and I smiled. This was nice. It certainly cheered up my thoughts, and I was feeling pretty good about today now.

It’s not so bad. They’ll come up with something, I’m sure. I’ve already seen Uncle John, and that was nice enough. At the worst, he’ll just leave in a bit.

That’s what I told myself, what I thought, and what I made myself believe, as that special L.A. winter sun glowed onto my face.

Little did I know, that was just the least of my worries. It was about to get worse. Way worse.

Suddenly, my sister poked her head into my room, her long, dark hair in a pony-tail. A few strands had fallen out, and they framed her oval face. Her expression was very mature; concerned, confident, tranquil. But I knew that mature look was just a cover for the young, and energy filled Soo that I knew. Even though she was only a year older than my brother, she was still the oldest, and I think she felt the need to help out our mom a lot, to try to ease the burden of being a single mother. It must have taken away some of care-free nature, to be always helping out, making sure that Eric and I were okay, healthy, happy.
